About the artist

1932 —

The French photographer Christian Lemaire discovered photography at the age of eighteen, having been gifted a camera by his father. He joined the Dunkirk Photography Club, which allowed him to participate in several competitions of French photography associations, and won numerous amateur prizes. Lemaire started his professional career as the assistant of Jacques Rouchon, later becoming a photojournalist and advertising photographer. His humanist images of France throughout the second half of the twentieth century form the bulk of Lemaire's body of work.
