Dirk de Herder

About the artist

1914 — 2003

Dirk de Herder, born in Rotterdam in 1914, was a Dutch visual artist and photographer. His father was a musician, and though de Herder intended for a time to become a painter, he would settle on photography, exclusively using natural light in his compositions. The likes of Brassaï, the French artist with whom de Herder maintained a friendship, and the American Man Ray were among his artistic influences. De Herder died in 2003; much of his work has been donated to the Fotomuseum Den Haag by the de Herder family.
