Édouard Boubat

About the artist

1923 — 1999

Born in Montmartre, Paris, Boubat was perhaps the personification of the French humanist movement in photography. Having studied typography, Boubat did not take his first picture until after WWII. He would go on to win the Kodak Prize, become a freelance photojournalist and earn the nickname "the photographer of peace." In 1988, he was awarded the Hasselblad Award for major achievement within photography. His works, mostly shot in France but as far afield as Madras, tended to capture moments of beauty or simplicity in everyday life.

Boubat has been exhibited in Stockholm and Switzerland, London and New York. He continued working until his death in 1999.
